Solar Panel Efficiency

Solar panel efficiency is a metric showing how much energy the solar panel produces. Solar panels usually turn from 15 to 23% of sunlight into electrical energy. Therefore, the most efficient solar panels have 23% efficiency. The amount of usable solar energy, called solar performance, mostly depends on the weather conditions and solar system placement.

Other important criteria of solar panel efficiency are its environmental impact, safety, and ease of use. Solar panels are an advanced form of technology with different factors to consider

There are a few types of solar panels, and the most common ones are monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin-film solar panels.

The efficiency of the solar cells is different from the efficiency of the solar panel system. The most efficient solar panels are the monocrystalline panels, also called single-crystalline cells. They are produced from silicon and usually have dark colors and rounded edges.

Monocrystalline panels have a single-cell structure, creating minimal resistance to the flow of electricity. Polycrystalline solar panels, also called multi-crystalline cells, are composed of silicon fragments as a block of crystals. Polycrystalline solar panels are less efficient and have a square cut and blue appearance. Monocrystalline panels are more expensive due to their high efficiency and the manufacturing process. With current advancements in the solar panel development market, their prices are going down.

Thin-film solar panels have different technology and are made out of a different type of silicon. They are much cheaper and have a solid black color. However, thin-film panels have low efficiency and are not very suitable for residential use as they require a lot of space to be installed.

Solar panel efficiency falls when temperatures increase. To reduce the negative effects of the heat, the panels can be installed a bit higher above the roof so that airflow can cool the panels.

In winter, solar panel efficiency does not get affected. Even through snow, the sunlight can reach the panels and produce electricity. On clear, cold days, solar panels can produce even more electricity as the snow reflects extra light.

Choosing the right solar panel company and installer is a very important step when choosing a solar panel cell type. Correct photovoltaic panel installation increases the efficiency of the solar panel system. The right angle and the orientation of the panels help you receive the optimal amount of sunlight and energy through the year. Solar system maintenance is also an important part of ownership. Having panels cleaned and updated will keep the efficiency high over time.

Installing a solar panel backup battery is another option to increase efficiency. This will maintain your budget for a long period of time.
